AOL and AIM's e-mail servers allow you
to send and receive e-mail using most common e-mail applications.
Setting up Mail (Apple® OS® X Mail) is quick and
easy.
Now you can access your AOL® or AIM® e-mail using any e-mail program that supports both the POP3 and IMAP protocols. The major difference between POP3 and IMAP is that POP3 downloads the messages and stores them on your computer's hard drive and IMAP stores the messages on AOL's mail servers.
Setup Mail Using IMAP or POP for a First Time User
AOL and AIM's e-mail servers allow you to send and receive e-mail using most common e-mail applications. Setting up Mail (Apple® OS® X Mail) is quick and easy. If you are a first time user, you will find it easy to set up Mail to send and receive AOL® or AIM® mail.
To set up Mail using IMAP or POP for the first time:
Note: If you do not currently have an active Internet connection,
sign on to the AOL® or AIM® service.
1. Double-click the
Mail icon in
the
Dock. If you do not find the
Mail icon in the
Dock, navigate to the
Applications folder, then click the
Dock icon.
2. In the
Full Name: box, type your name
as you would like it to appear on your outgoing e-mail (for
example, Gabby Grace).
3. In the
Email Address: box, type your
AOL® or AIM® e-mail address (for example,
GabbyGrace@aol.com or GabbyGrace@aim.com).
4. In the
Incoming mail server: box, type:
- imap.aol.com or imap.aim.com for IMAP
- pop.aol.com or pop.aim.com for POP
5. In the
Mail Server Type: section, select the
IMAP or
POP option appropriately.
6. In the
User Name: box, type your
AOL® or AIM® screen name (for example, GabbyGrace).
7. In the
Password: box, type your
AOL® or AIM® password.
8. In the
Outgoing Mail Server:
box, type
smtp.aol.com or
smtp.aim.com.
9. Click the
OK button.
10. When you are prompted for your password, type your AOL or AIM
password.
11. Click the
OK button.
If you are using POP, please follow the steps below to complete the setup:
12. Open
Mail Preferences.
13. Click the
Accounts icon, then click the
Advanced tab.
14. Click the
Remove copy from server after retrieving a message box to clear it.

Configure a New E-mail Account Using IMAP or POP in Mail
If you have previously used Mail, you can set up a new e-mail account for your current information.
To configure a new e-mail account using IMAP or POP in Mail:
1. Double-click the Mail icon in
the Dock. If you do not find the Mail icon in the Dock, navigate to the Applications folder, then click the Dock icon.
2. Click the Mail menu, then click
Preferences.
Notes:
- If Entourage is not your default e-mail program, you may be prompted to specify whether you want to use it as the default by clicking the Yes or No button.
- If the AOL® or AIM® Setup Assistant does not appear, on the Tools menu, click Accounts, and then click New drop-down menu to open it, choose Mail from the list, then skip to Step 5.
3. In the Mail Preferences window, click
the Accounts tab.
4. Click the Create Account button.
5. In the Account Type: section, select IMAP or POP option appropriately.
6. In the Description: box, type a
description for the mailbox. (for example, GabbyGrace, AOL or AIM
Email).
7. In the Email Address: box, type your
AOL or AIM e-mail address (for example, GabbyGrace@aol.com or
GabbyGrace@aim.com).
8. In the Incoming Server: box, type:
- imap.aol.com or imap.aim.com for IMAP
- pop.aol.com or pop.aim.com for POP
9. In the
User Name: box, type your AOL
or AIM screen name (for example, GabbyGrace).
10. In the
Password: box, type your AOL
or AIM password.
11. In the
Outgoing Server: box, type:
smtp.aol.com or
smtp.aim.com.
12. Click the
Use authentication when sending
mail box to place a check mark in it.
13. In the
SMTP User: box, type your AOL
or AIM screen name (for example, GabbyGrace).
14. In the
SMTP Password: box, type your
AOL or AIM password.
15. Click the
Account Options tab.
16. Ensure the
Enable this Account, and the
Include this account when checking for new
mail boxes are checked.
17. In the
Message Caching: box, click
Cache all messages locally.
18. In the
Connect to server using port: box, change the number to
587.
19. Click the
OK button.
